Drumming away his sorrows
BackBy Kanupriya Jhanji Special to Panjab Now Jagraon- Meet a master drummer. He is 70-year-old Master Sarupa Dholi of this town. As many as six decades have passed since he took to drumming at the tender age of ten as a disciple of Ramji Lal, a legendery drummer of this town whose son Gopi has earned a lot of fame and money by playing drum with bhangra teams outfits in films and TV shows. Gopi is nearly 20 years younger to him.Sarupa, who has travelled all over North India and exhibited his art, is candid enough to express his lament. While his grubhai Gopi has achieved worldwide fame, he has remained an obscure artist, lost in the wilderness. That in spite of the fact that he is probably a far better drum-beater than his gurubhai. Watching this old drummer in action is really a treat. The intensity with which he strikes the drum clearly shows up on his wrinkling face. His understanding and fusion of beat and rhythm is unique . Once he gets going, it is difficult to walk away. The old artist has passed on the art of beating the drum to his son Babu Ram who is now 30-years-old. And he loves to give tips to any youngster keen on learning the art. But since the son is finding it hard to earn a decent living out of drumming alone, the father-son duo now attend various melas and religious congregations where the father tries to collect some money by playing the dhol while the son puts up a shop to sell toys and other small items.
